Cyberstorm: Coastalville in Crisis

The CyberStorm: Coastalville in Crisis Exercise is a cyber-attack response training event that simulates a large-scale cyber-attack on Coastalville. The city's critical infrastructure, including its power grid, transportation systems, and communication networks, has been compromised by sophisticated cyber criminals known as ShadowByte.

 

As part of the exercise, participants will step into the roles of city officials, cybersecurity experts, emergency responders, and other key stakeholders, tasked with leading the response efforts and mitigating the impact of the cyber-attack.

 

Participants will gain valuable experience in responding to a cyber-attack, enhancing their critical thinking skills, and developing strategies for more effective incident management and cyber resilience.

 

Learning Objectives

• Incident Response: Develop skills in managing and coordinating the response to a large-scale cyber-attack, including incident triage, resource allocation, and communication protocols.

• Crisis Management: Enhance crisis management capabilities by navigating complex decision-making scenarios, prioritizing response efforts, and adapting strategies in real-time.

• Collaboration and Communication: Strengthen teamwork and effective communication skills among participants from different roles and departments to facilitate a coordinated response.

• Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Identify and assess risks associated with the cyber-attack, develop strategies to mitigate those risks, and prioritize actions based on potential impacts.

• Lessons Learned and Improvement: Refection on the decision-making processes, analyze the outcomes, and identify areas for improvement in incident response protocols, cyber defenses, and overall preparedness.

 

Duration

• The exercise is designed to be conducted over the course of a full day, with a recommended duration of 8 to 10 hours. This allows for in-depth exploration of the scenario, active decision-making, and comprehensive discussions among participants. 

• The exercise may also be conducted in a three-hour session while still covering key aspects of the scenario.

• From that launch, the Coastalville Board of Advisors was assembled to build the City of Coastalville. Our board represents technical and subject matter experts with decades of senior leader crisis management, disaster and military and civilian law enforcement experience who are dedicated to providing the most comprehensive immersive training available.
