Collaborative Resilience: Coastalville's Community Task Force

This is a dynamic training simulation designed to develop participants' leadership decision-making skills in the context of community-based disaster management and resilience. Participants will take on the roles of representatives from local government, community organizations, businesses, and residents, forming a task force to address the unique challenges faced by Coastalville in disaster risk reduction and response.

​

In this immersive training experience, participants step into the shoes of key decision-makers entrusted with the responsibility of managing a catastrophic disaster facing the city of Coastalville. With resource allocation, stakeholder engagement, media interactions, and ethical dilemmas at the forefront, participants will face a series of dynamic challenges designed to push their decision-making abilities.

Learning Objectives

  • Leadership Decision-Making: Participants will enhance their ability to make informed and effective decisions in complex and rapidly evolving disaster situations.

  • Collaboration & Communication: Participants will develop skills in fostering collaboration, active listening, and effective communication within a diverse task force environment.

 

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Participants will learn strategies for engaging and involving diverse stakeholders, including community members, local officials, and other relevant entities, in decision-making processes.

 

  • Equity & Social Justice: Participants will explore the importance of addressing equity and social justice in disaster management, with a focus on vulnerable populations and their specific needs.

 

  • Policy Development & Implementation: Participants will gain practical experience in formulating policy recommendations, creating implementation plans, and considering long-term sustainability in disaster management.

Duration

  • For maximum training benefits, we recommend conducting this exercise over a period of two to three days. This timeframe allows sufficient time for participants to immerse themselves in the simulation, engage in collaborative discussions, develop policy recommendations, and receive feedback. Based on specific training needs, the exercise can be modified to meet shorter timeframes.
